The future of Microsoft SharePoint

We have summed up the, in our opinion, most important messages from Microsoft‘s presentation The Future of SharePoint about the future of SharePoint.

SharePoint on premise will remain
Microsoft is committed to maintaining and improving SharePoint on premise. Coming in 2017, Microsoft will release feature pack updates for SharePoint Server 2016. Those feature packs will take a subset of features and improvements from SharePoint Online and bring them to on premise systems.

The "Sites" Link in Office 365 is "SharePoint" again
The change in the Office 365 navigation from "Sites" to "SharePoint" caused a number of irritations. The users ware afraid that SharePoint had disappeared. In fact, SharePoint is one of the key components of the Office 365 environment and at the core of its productivity. The name change was reversed.

Importance of Office Graph
The new Office Graph manages how content is presented within either the web or mobile interface of SharePoint. Office Graph also shows recently used and popular documents for easy access. It also forms the basis of the Delve feature in Office 365.

SharePoint Designer is replaced by Microsoft Flow and Power Apps
Microsoft is bringing some of the features of SharePoint Designer and putting them directly into Team Sites. You can now create a simple approval workflow based on the creation of an item in a list by using the new feature to run the workflow. Via Power Apps, you can modify how the approval form appears on a mobile device.

Introduction of a new SharePoint Framework
The new SharePoint framework runs on every browser. The SharePoint mobile app hooks into this framework to run client-side code in a mobile device. It is compatible with all existing SharePoint workflows. Microsoft is also providing simple APIs with consistent end points for developing solutions.
