The Marburg synagogues

Reconstructions of Jewish places in Marburg

The medieval synagogue and the synagogue on Universitätsstraße, destroyed in 1938, digitally reconstructed.

Reconstruction of the medieval synagogue at Marburg’s Obermarkt
Medieval synagogue at the Obermarkt

Our gift for the city’s 800th birthday.

The medieval synagogue at the end of the Obermarkt was discovered during construction work in the 1990s. For the city’s Marburg800 anniversary, we rebuilt it virtually and gave it to the city of Marburg as a birthday present.

The reconstruction is embedded in a medieval scene: the tour takes you back to the market of the 14th century.

Back in today’s cityscape.

The synagogue on Marburg’s Universitätsstraße was built in 1897 and destroyed in the November pogrom of 1938. We reconstructed it digitally on our own initiative as a pilot project, based on historical plans and photographs.

Here the aim was to fit the building into the present-day cityscape: it stands true to scale where the Garten des Gedenkens (Garden of Remembrance) is today. Visitors move through the building, follow a guided tour and call up background information on info panels.
