In 2027, Philipps University of Marburg will celebrate its 500th anniversary. One of the key anniversary projects, the “Marburger Wissensräume,” runs on a platform developed by INOSOFT. The project was presented at the university’s kickoff press conference on September 30.
Since 1527, knowledge has been generated in Marburg—in lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and collections. Many of these places no longer exist today or are not open to the public. This is where the “Marburger Wissensräume” research project at the Institute of Art History comes in. Led by Prof. Dr. Peter Bell and with the participation of students, the project brings 500 years of university, scientific, and architectural history to life digitally. The buildings are linked to their uses and to the stories of the people who studied, taught, and worked there.
As a partner, INOSOFT provides the technical platform. It is based on our Waypoints technology for web-based 3D reconstruction and works directly in the browser, even on a smartphone. This makes it possible to explore places that have long since disappeared, such as the former Dominican monastery, on whose foundations the Old University stands today. Texts, audio and video content in 2D and 360 degrees, as well as interactive games, complement the virtual spaces.
At the press conference on September 30, where President Prof. Dr. Thomas Nauss and Vice President Prof. Dr. Evelyn Korn introduced the anniversary year, Prof. Dr. Peter Bell and Coordinator Andreas Schübeler presented the “Wissensräume” together with our CEO Thomas Winzer.
“As a Marburg-based company, we are proud to be able to contribute to this anniversary. We are delighted to be making the history of our university accessible to everyone, including those who are not here in town,” says Thomas Winzer.
On October 14, 2026, the start of the anniversary year, the platform will go live with its initial content. Over the course of the anniversary year, additional locations, sources, and research findings will be added step by step.
